One of the awesome activities you can do during winter is skiing. It's a popular and fun way to stay active, spend time outdoors and have fun with friends or family members.
Skiing, much like other forms of physical activity, requires proper precautions to keep you and the people around you safe on the slopes. The last thing you want is to sustain a fracture or an injury in the middle of your vacation.
Here are six safety tips that you should keep in mind to help you enjoy this type of adventure holiday:
1. Dress Appropriately
Wearing the right clothes is a must when you're on the slopes. Failure to do so could increase your likelihood of catching hypothermia. Before heading out, make sure you're wearing the following:
- High-quality and insulated ski clothing, including ski pants and jackets
- A warm pair of gloves, socks and ski boots
- A helmet to help prevent head injury and scalp burn
- Sun goggles or glasses to shield your eyes from sun glare
2. Safeguard Your Skin from the Sun
This idea may sound crazy, but you can sustain sunburn on a cold winter day. Snow is a highly reflective material. On a clear day, you can expect much of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays to reflect and hit your skin.
You can prevent nasty sunburn by taking note of these tips:
- Put on a lip balm that contains a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15. Cracked, burnt and dry lips are uncomfortable and extremely sensitive when you expose them to the sun. Keep this part of your body protected by applying lip balm throughout the day.
- Liberally slather sunscreen on your neck, face and ears 30 minutes before heading out on the slopes. Top up on your sunblock throughout the day especially if the snow or sweat is washing off the cream.
- As much as possible, do your outdoor winter sports activities late in the afternoon or early in the morning. Avoid going out at noon when the sun is at its strongest.
3. Prime Your Body for Skiing
Skiing is a physically demanding activity. You'll want to be physically fit if you want to enjoy your time at the slopes. A few weeks before your planned holiday, work out your body to help you get used to the physical challenges of this sport. Follow a fitness training regimen that factors in endurance, strength and flexibility.
4. Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Remember that you're not the only person having fun in the ski resort. When you're on the slopes, you should know how to avoid collisions. Stay in control of your speed at all times and always check uphill and downhill before you set off.
5. Carry Communication Devices
Bring a mobile phone or a two-way radio with you in a waterproof pouch in the event of an emergency. Weather can sometimes change quickly and without warning. If you find yourself lost or out of your comfort zone due to the snow or cold conditions, use your communication device to reach out to your family, friends or nearby emergency personnel in the area.
6. Buddy up When Heading into the Trees
Regardless of your skill level, you should pair up if you plan to ski into the trees. Keep them in your line of sight as much as possible. If you can no longer spot them, call out to each other or use your communication device to regroup. Also, if you and your buddy are skiing into the trees, be ready to make a lot of short turns to avoid crashing into them.
