From the discovery of fire to the latest innovations in space travel, humanity has used technology to improve our living conditions and conquer our environments.

But even something as seemingly trivial as entertainment can serve as a great case study for how technology can alter the fundamental elements of human behavior.

The evolution of images

Cave art represents some of the earliest evidence of human cultural activity, and the ability for the visual image to tell stories has shown a phenomenal evolution. From the lifelike paintings of the Renaissance, to the Lumière brothers’ role in the development of motion pictures, we quickly realized how a picture can tell a thousand words.

It’s a concept that continues to fascinate us in the present day. Film media has been revolutionized from the early days of Hollywood through to the digital technologies that allow brands like Netflix to instantly stream a world of cinema into our homes. Whilst the rise of visually-themed social media sites like Instagram and Snapchat show how we are still in thrall to the simple power of images.

Musical innovation

Music has also been with us since prehistoric times, and it has shown an equally impressive evolution through the millennia. But it’s still hard to believe that recorded music has been around for little over a century, and that our ancestors would have had to physically be near a live performance in order to hear any music at all.

And Apple’s introduction of the iPod in 2001 was a momentous occasion as it gave us the previously unimaginable abilities to store and listen to thousands of songs at our own convenience. And as streaming sites like Spotify and Deezer have expanded our listening options even further, it seems that convenience and choice are the key features of the digital entertainment revolution.

Video gaming futures

It’s a concept that certainly applies to the gaming world too. Whilst games like chess, draughts and roulette have been with us for centuries, it was only relatively recently that these games were granted the convenience that other entertainments have enjoyed.

From Taito developing the classic arcade machines of Space Invaders, to Nintendo reinventing video games in the home, gaming has enjoyed a rapid digital evolution. And with even traditional games like roulette being reinvented at the Betway website, it shows how innovation and convenience are increasingly important aspects of 21st century gaming

And it’s a concept that continues to the present day as media forms like movies, music and video gaming have converged to allow consumers a seamless way to stay entertained.

So whether it’s listening to the world’s biggest hip-hop stars on the soundtrack to the Grand Theft Auto game, or watching the latest Hollywood blockbuster on our smart TVs whilst playing mobile roulette on a smartphone, it all shows how our entertainment options have become more convenient, more immersive, and more dynamic than our ancestors could have ever imagined.
