How’s your phone doing? Is it cracked or damaged somehow? Are you thinking about an upgrade? You certainly wouldn’t be alone. Today in the US, a phone screen gets cracked every 2 seconds and 95 million smartphones are dropped and damaged every single year. That amounts to 29.8 billion dollars in electronic devices. Also, if you’ve ever broken a phone in the past, then you’re 2x as likely to break a phone again. Smartphones are at a whole new level of running your business including mass texting.
Even with all of this frequent damage, the lifecycle of a smartphone is actually increasing. For instance, in 2016, the average life cycle was 23 months. By 2019, it had gone up by an average of 10 months. It’s partly because smartphone technology has leveled off somewhat and we simply aren’t as excited about new features as we once were. Also, the cost of smartphones has gone up significantly.
With all of this in mind, one obvious thing to do is to do better at protecting the phones we have. Seventy-two percent of us have broken a phone before and 44% of us weren’t using a phone case at the time.
There are three main things to do to protect your phone. Use a quality phone case to protect against drops and damage. Consider a screen protector to prevent scratches, and keep your battery charged at 50% or higher as often as possible to maximize battery life.
Beyond that, consider repairing your phone rather than purchasing a new one. It will usually save you money, and it’s better for the environment.
