As a new retail owner, you’re likely excited about the journey ahead but also apprehensive since you’ve never been down this road before. You must get off on the right foot and head in the right direction from the start if you wish to succeed in the industry.

You must not only work hard for what you want but also have business practices in place that help you excel and stand out among your competitors. The four following pieces of advice will help you as a new retail owner focus on the areas that matter the most and will ensure you thrive in your new position.

1. Choose A Prime Location

It’s all about location when it comes to working in the industry and setting up a fashion retail store. Do your homework and figure out what place makes the most sense to sell your products and goods. It may be in the local mall, a standalone shop, or you may choose to sell online and dive into the e-commerce business. Maximize the appearance of your physical shop and be sure to market your company and what you’re selling appropriately to get the word out. First impressions matter when walking into a store so make sure to update and upkeep it.

2. Buy in Bulk

There are going to be a lot of costs and expenses on your end when first setting up your retail store and well into the future. You can save yourself money, time, and headaches by looking into buying wholesale t-shirts and other items in bulk. You can build a great relationship with a supplier and then place new orders as necessary. You can choose from a wide range of styles this way and purchase many apparel items at a fraction of the cost when compared to retail prices.

3. Hire Wisely & Train Your Staff

Another piece of advice for new retail owners is to hire wisely and train your staff. You must have employees working for you who are motivated to help you reach your goals and provide great service. Each time a customer walks through your doors or contacts you with a question you want them to be greeted appropriately and make sure your staff knows how to interact professionally with them and answer any questions they may have. Each employee should know about the products on the floor or that you’re selling and you may want to have experts assigned in each category.

4. Gather Customer Feedback

If you want to be successful working in the retail business then you must listen to your customers and make changes based on these remarks. Gather customer feedback often and hear what they have to say about your store, service, and how you’re performing overall. Avoid making assumptions or big decisions without having the data and feedback to back up what you’re doing. Listening to what shoppers think provides you with insights that you can use to then improve all areas of your retail business including product, pricing, design, and service. There are plenty of opportunities to do so whether it’s informal while they’re making a return or through a survey.
