Looking at the recent statistics on universities and colleges in America, it doesn’t paint a pretty picture. Undergraduate enrollment has dropped almost 10% since the pandemic, the value of a college degree is steadily dropping, and 50% of colleges themselves are worried about serving students with staffing shortages. Colleges today are a large distance away from their heyday as an American essential.

Still, colleges represent one of the single greatest resources for economic mobility in the United States. It’s not at all a positive to society when they start to lose their prominence and less people become educated. So what are colleges doing in response? There are many actions being taken, things as simple as raising tuition and prestige, but one of the more interesting options is a college merger.

A college merger happens when one college, facing the brink of failure, decides to unite with another. This offers a slew of benefits that other options colleges facing failure do not. It gives the students a place to go, it will have direct resources for these students, it lets students keep some sort of identity, and it helps keep education at peak importance.

So while there certainly are downsides, things like increased costs, loss of a voice, and loss of college-specific programs. The benefits of a college uniting with another gives a bit of hope to all the colleges that just can’t quite cut it right now. It’s not a cherry fate, but it’s one that stops more and more students and faculty from dropping from academia.
