Eyeglasses are one of the most common accessories that can be seen on a person. In fact, they draw no more “spectacle” than wearing earrings or necklaces. Nearly everyone wears glasses of some sort, whether for vision correction, to block the sun, or some other use for a particular profession or activity.
Eyeglasses actually have quite an interesting history. They were developed in Italy in the 13th century and were made of glass-blown lenses fitted into wooden or leather frames. Originally they had to be held in place with the hands and were mainly used by monks, and later, scholars. It’s not for nothing that we still can easily associate glasses with intelligence.
Today, as accurate lens development has become the norm, eyeglasses are still morphing into new realms. It’s assumed that the glasses we choose will have great lenses, so the most common questions now are more about style and additional functions.
Glasses development is also moving far beyond the simple need for vision improvement. With new technologies, eyeglasses are giving some wearers vision that seems absolutely superhuman. Even Clark Kent may need to rethink discarding his disguise.
