If you’ve ever searched for a new job before, you know it can get really frustrating. Watching someone go through the ups and downs of a job search might make you feel like you should do something to help them out.

Luckily, there are a variety of ways you can support someone during their job search, from emotional support all the way to introducing them to the right people.

No more standing by and feeling helpless. It’s time to be helpful and learn how to support someone who is struggling with their job search.

Put Your Skills to Work

Are you a good proofreader or a social media whiz?

Those skills can come in handy when someone you know is trying to find a job and having no luck. Be their second set of eyes on their resume or cover letter to make sure there are no mistakes. Suggest places where they could change the wording or spice it up.

A professional profile on a site like LinkedIn is also incredibly helpful for job hunters.

You may be able to suggest a catchy headline, a better profile picture, or even help them write their about section so it sounds more interesting. Creating a full LinkedIn profile can be overwhelming for some people, so they’ll probably appreciate some input.

Tap Into Your Network

If you have your own LinkedIn profile or an expansive network of people around you, there’s a good chance you might be able to point them in the right direction.

Pull together a list of people you know in the right industry that may have leads for the person you’re trying to help. Reach out and make a glowing introduction that will help them with first impressions.

You can also volunteer to go to a networking event with them so you can cover more ground in less time.

Show your support by sharing a link to their portfolio or website on your social media. You never know when it might catch someone’s eye and land them the job they’ve been dreaming of.

Help Them Practice

Going to interviews makes a lot of people nervous, which makes practicing beforehand important to their success.

Arm yourself with a list of most common interview questions and sit down with the other person to conduct a mock interview. You can work through their answers together and find out where they might need a little work before they go through with the real deal.

If they are having a virtual interview over skype or zoom, offer to run a trial run with them to address any technical bugs, lighting issues, or problems with sound.

Even something as simple as practicing their hand shake will make them feel more confident heading into their meetings during their job search.

Do Some Research

One of the hardest parts of the job search is looking up all the information you need to find the right job. It’s one place anyone would be happy to have some support.

There’s plenty of research to be done before the application process even starts. Depending on their chosen profession, you can help them look up how much they should be making, where they can make the most money, and where that profession is in high demand.

For example, if they’re hoping to become a radiologist, they could ask for a higher salary if they worked in New York than if they worked in North Carolina.

Once they know where they want to work, you can help them look up relevant job listings, search for career coaches, and look into companies they hope to work for. Anything to get a leg up on the competition when writing their resume and cover letter.

Be There For Them

The best way to support someone that’s going through a difficult job search is to be there for them emotionally.

During a long job hunt, it’s easy to lose confidence or feel lost. Even a short venting session can make someone feel a lot better about what they’re going through.

Having someone in their corner to talk to before interviews, have lunch with after an interview, get a boost from when they don’t get a job, and talk them out of settling for a job below them makes all the difference. Let them know you are there for them through this long process whenever they need you.

In Conclusion

No one wants to go through a job search alone. It’s a long process that can lead to a lot of stress and frustration, which means a support system is vital to keeping them going.

Being part of that support system for someone is incredibly rewarding because you get to watch them finally get that perfect job in the end.

Next time someone you know is struggling with their job search, use these tips to figure out what you can do to lend a hand. We promise they’ll appreciate whatever you can offer.
