If every nursing home in the US, regardless of size or location, had access to an APRN or a physician, 83% of health issues could be treated in-house, and hospital readmissions could be reduced by up to 70%.

During the height of the pandemic, telemedicine in nursing homes skyrocketed in all areas of medicine. It’s important that nursing homes, where many of our most vulnerable citizens reside, not get left behind.

In light of COVID, it’s abundantly clear that nursing homes are in serious need of upgrades to daily operations and of meeting staffing needs to provide the best care to every patient. Embracing telemedicine and employing APRNs can help nursing homes to rise to the occasion and function at the necessary levels.

According to one study, having an APRN on site reduces hospitalizations by 48% and reduces costs by 40%. In fact, if every nursing home in the US employed an APRN we could save $2.8 billion per year in Medicare costs.

Additionally, if every nursing home adopted telemedicine practices, then there would be no lack of physician care or availability and most common diagnoses could be treated in-house.

It’s time for every nursing home to embrace the future of medicine.
