Everyone knows how annoying it is to receive spam calls day after day. Unfortunately, even with caller ID, it’s not unusual to pick up a local number only to find out that the warranty on your vehicle is about to expire. Never mind that it’s a 2007, pre-owned minivan in your driveway. You better take action before it’s too late!
Currently, in the US, which ranks number 8 in the most spammed places in the world, an average of 54% of received calls are spam. It’s no wonder we’ve lost trust in telecommunications! Fortunately, STIR/SHAKEN regulations are attempting to change all of that.
Legislators are working to implement regulations that would require every phone company to run incoming calls through a kind of checkpoint to let the recipient know what kind of call they’re receiving. Outbound calls from businesses would be sent through the carrier for authentication. The recipient’s caller ID would show whether the caller has been authenticated, partially authenticated, or likely spam. STIR/SHAKEN is trying to make spam calling a thing of the past.
