When you’re a homeowner, it often makes more sense for you to try to fix any issues with your home on your own before choosing to pay a professional. With most small things that go wrong around a home, you can either figure it out on your own or can look online for help with your DIY. However, in some situations, it really is worth it to simply hire a professional from the get-go.

To help you recognize these types of situations, here are three home repairs that require professional help, even if you’re an experienced DIY-er.

Scraping Off Popcorn Ceiling

In many older homes, popcorn ceilings were all the rage. But now, most modern homeowners would rather have their ceilings less sparkly and much smoother.

If your home has a popcorn ceiling, while it might seem like a repair that you could easily do with a little time and effort, it’s usually best to leave this to a professional. Marla Christiansen, a contributor to Real Simple, shares that if you’re not very careful when you’re scraping the ceiling, you could create a lot of holes and divots that then need to be repaired. And because all of this work will require you to be up on a ladder and looking straight up, you could quickly find your body running out of steam. So to get this done quickly and correctly the first time, it’s a good idea to just call a professional.

Anything That Could Potentially Harm You Or Your Home

Another thing you’ll need to consider before taking on a home improvement project is whether or not there’s a chance that you could severely harm yourself or your home if something were to go wrong, along with what the chances are that you won’t know exactly what you’re doing the whole time.

For most people, Melanie Pinola, a contributor to LifeHacker.com, recommends that any work that requires plumbing, electrical, gas lines, or repairs to the foundation or structure of your home should be left to professionals. Professionals will know exactly what they’re doing and have the knowledge and tools to make all the necessary repairs in a safe manner.

A Remodel

While remodels can be expensive in and of themselves, and more expensive when you have a professional doing the work, if you have a project with a big scope like this, State Farm recommends that you bring in a professional to do the work. As far as your timeline and your budget for materials, having a professional on the job will likely save you money rather than doing this part yourself anyway.

If you’ve got some of the above-mentioned projects on your to-do list, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you know if you should hire a professional as opposed to doing the work yourself.
