Basically everyone in the modern world has a refrigerator in their house. However, not everyone knows that there are certain things you can or should be doing to make this appliance much more efficient.

To help you see how this can be done, here are three ways to make your refrigerator more efficient within your own home.

Make Sure You’re Setting To The Right Temperature

The very first thing you should take a look at when trying to make your refrigerator more efficient is the temperature in which you have your fridge set.

According to Erin Huffstetler, a contributor to The Spruce, most people have their refrigerator set at about 37 degrees Fahrenheit. However, you can raise that temperature a little bit so that your refrigerator isn’t having to work so hard while still being able to keep your food at a safe temperature. In most cases, bringing the temperature up to 40 degrees Fahrenheit is still completely safe. Keep in mind that the fuller your refrigerator is, like if you have an industrial-size chiller full of food for a restaurant, it will automatically be more efficient since there’s less empty air to chill.

Leave Space Around Your Fridge

While you don’t want there to be a lot of empty space within your fridge if you want it to run as efficiently as possible, this principle is actually opposite when talking about the space outside of your fridge.

Ideally, Edison International shares that you should keep at least a few inches of space all around your fridge so that it can have good circulation. If you have items placed on top of your fridge or right next to it, especially if those items produce heat like a stove or oven, you’re going to be making your refrigerator a lot less efficient. So if you can manage it, try to move your fridge a few inches away from the wall or anything else around it so that there’s better air flow around it.

Keep The Unit Clean

Another easy way to keep your refrigerator operating as efficiently as possible, according to Elizabeth Lilly, a contributor to This Old House, is to keep the vital parts of your fridge as clean as you can.

The most important of these parts to keep clean is the condenser coil. To do this, turn your refrigerator off while you take a vacuum brush attachment under the fridge to get off all the dirt and dust that has accumulated under there. After this, you’ll notice that your fridge is much more efficient and even uses less energy than before.

If you’re wanting to help your refrigerator operate as efficiently as possible, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you learn how you can accomplish this.
