There’s so much myth and mystery around what actually equates to a healthy diet and lifestyle in the modern day. Each week new wonder products are released onto the market claiming all manner of benefits, but how can you confirm that such information is valid? Even the nutritional value of the humble egg has been argued over for many decades, making it extremely difficult to decide what the best option really is. Cutting through the chaos to uncover the truth is so important for your wellbeing, as falling into the trap of false advertisement could even lead to negative side effects. If you want to figure out exactly how you can live well, then read on to see some of the most common health and diet myths debunked.

Myth 1: Sugar Inside Fruit Is Unhealthy

Though consuming any form of sugar in excess is bad for you, the sugar inside fruit is far healthier than the processed refined kind that you might find inside a bar of chocolate. The sweet taste of fruit is actually due to a compound called fructose, which is essentially a naturally occurring sugar. This means that fructose itself is not unhealthy, as it comes directly from a plant that’s also filled with many other nutritionally beneficial vitamins and minerals. A bowl of strawberries can definitely sustain a sweet tooth, and it’s considerably better for your body and mind than a slice of prepackaged cake.

Myth 2: Fasting Is Bad For You

Fasting is the act of avoiding food for a certain amount of time, and the practice is often used when dieting in order to achieve a ‘feeding window’ in which you are allowed to eat whatever you like (within reason). Many people believe that going without food causes the body to enter a ‘starvation mode’ in which any excess fat is stored to increase weight, but the fact of the matter is that if you are eating less then you simply are not going to put on any extra pounds. Many cultures utilise intermittent fasting for religious purposes, often citing its health and weight management benefits as part of their reasoning. Obviously you musnt go longer than 24 hours without food as this will cause you to lose energy and experience other uncomfortable side effects, so always be sensible and follow the advice of your healthcare professional whenever you decide to fast.

Myth 3: An Excess Of Protein & Peptides Will Build Muscles

Many gym-goers talk about nothing else other than how much they love protein, drinking thick whey shakes and gobbling up chicken and fish at every opportunity. To add to this, in recent years a bigger focus has been put on peptides are their apparent ability to grow and repair muscle tissue, adding a whole new obsession for body builders around the globe. However, consuming an excess of protein will not provide you with the Schwarzenegger look you’ve been aiming for, as it will simply be converted into and stored as fat inside your body due to the fact that your muscles only need a certain amount to regrow properly. As well as this, research on peptides and their benefits has been very brief, with no long term studies actually providing the claims that have been made. You can click here to find out more about specific peptides, their claims and the supposed benefits, and the potential side effects too.

Myth 4: Cut Carbs From Your Diet

One of the worst things that you can do for your health and wellbeing is to cut out an entire food group from your diet, as you rely on each and every different form of food to consume the right nutrients to thrive. Carbohydrates are essential, and there’s no doubt about it! Far too many dieters claim that getting rid of potatoes, bread, pasta and rice will provide you with the weight loss you crave, yet it will be short lived and unenjoyable to say the very least. Complex carbs provide the body with a slow and sustainable release of energy, allowing you to stay alert and full of vigour throughout the day. Existing on fruits, vegetables and protein is unlikely to provide you with a similar energy boost, and it may even be difficult to meet your calories requirements without any carbohydrates in your meals.

With any luck, the information above can help you to decide on the best way to eat a nutritious diet and lead a healthy lifestyle. Don’t fall into the trap of any of these myths, as you may end up affecting your mental and physical wellbeing in the process.
