How to keep your RV in great condition

Traveling around the country in an RV is a fantastic way to spend your vacation. It truly feels like an adventure: you and your friends or family can get to explore new places together, discover places you’ve not heard of before, and increase your knowledge of the world. Some of us like RV vacations so much that we buy one for our escapades.

So keeping your RV in good condition is the same as it is with your car, right? Not necessarily, because you use your RV for only a few weeks a year, rather than almost every day. So here’s what you may need to do to make sure your RV is in great condition and ensure that you’re not disappointed with unexpected failures and repairs.

Maintain the interior

You’ll need to do this after each of your trips, and before you begin your next adventure. Take each item out of your refrigerator to clean it, and do a deep clean of surfaces, bowls, and basins. Check for mess in containers and drawers, too. Vacuum your floors and, with an attachment, pick up any debris from under the mattresses and cushions. Also, check any pantry items that may go stale.

Drain your water system

There’s no need to have water in your tanks after a trip, and stale water can mean extra cleaning for you before you take out your RV again. You need to start by turning off your system, then emptying your water heater. Open your hot and cold pipes, as well as your freshwater tank, in order to drain them. Turn on the pump to flush out any remaining water, then close all the drains. Then just clean the tank to remove any stale smells.

Give it a wash after each trip

Regular washes will boost the life of your RV. Before starting, seal the doors, windows, and storage compartments so that water doesn’t get in. Then clean from top to bottom—brush the roof initially, and clean the dirt downwards. Dry your RV once you’ve finished, then apply wax (let it dry first before wiping it off), and finally, wash the tires.

You can protect your vehicle further by using an RV garage. This will keep it protected from the weather, and there are plenty of different options from which to choose, depending on the size of your RV.

Look at the generator

Generators aren’t cheap, so you want to make sure yours is in good working order. One of the most important tasks you can carry out is to give it routine exercise, as it will perform better the more it’s used. Also, check its oil levels and the air inlet system.

Check your air conditioning

You won’t be very impressed if you’re traveling around in your RV during the summer without a working AC system, so it’s important to check that it’s working before embarking on your trip. You should carry out regular maintenance, as well as checking that the filters are clean and the seal around the unit is tight.
