When you were a kid your mother always used to tell you, “never get into a car with a stranger”. Although this may be true, there are a number of other considerations to make before getting into a car. Making sure you trust the driver is a very important start. There is nothing worse than getting into a car and feeling uneasy because the person behind the wheel is reckless and unsafe. Here are five considerations to make before you ride as a passenger in someone else’s car.

1.Older Drivers Can Pose More Risk to You

Whether you are driving with an elderly parent or grandparent, it is important to assess whether they are confident on the road. Even if they technically still hold a driving license they are more likely to get into an accident. In fact, 20 percent of older drivers experience collisions, due to a number of factors. Not only are there reactions slower, but they are also more likely to get into accidents due to medications they may be taking.

2. New Drivers May Make You Nervous

We were all a new driver once; you feel as though you are invincible and nobody could possibly hurt you. Although this isn’t the mentality of every new driver, it’s safe to say that many get a little overconfident when they first pass their test. Before getting into a car with a new driver you should definitely assess whether they are going to drive safely. Talk to them about how you feel and hopefully they will take your advice on board.

3. Have They Been Drinking?

Drink-driving is still extremely common. You would be surprised at how many people get behind the wheel after they have had a drink or two. Even if you don’t want to pay for a taxi to get home, it is so important to stay clear from mixing alcohol with driving. Not only is it illegal but you will also be putting your own life in danger.

4. Do You Trust Them?

We all have that one friend who tends to drive a little erratically. Nobody ever says anything but there is an unspoken rule that people feel nervous around them. You don’t have to get into a car with anybody that doesn’t make you feel safe. Talk to your friend or family member and let them know that their actions make you feel uncomfortable. Hopefully they will take this on board and drive safely when you are in the passenger seat.

5. Is Their Car Trustworthy?

One of your friends probably has the same car that they graduated high school with. Although it may seem perfectly functional it is so important to check your car thoroughly for safety. If it doesn’t seem safe and secure to you then it’s probably best to avoid it.

Although these notions are probably very obvious in your mind, it is still important to take note and recognize them. When you get into a car you are putting your life into somebody else’s hands, so you need to be able to trust them. Next time you are faced with a situation where you have to be a passenger, think about all of the considerations above. This will ensure that you stay safe and your mind is at ease.
