Improve warehouse management through supplier best practice compliance

A big part of any warehousing operation is taking deliveries. Of necessity this involves allowing suppliers on to site, and unless properly managed, this part of the warehousing process can be very disruptive. It’s not just about manufacturers of course. While many suppliers have their own transport and logistics operations accurately defined by their supply chain strategy, a lot of suppliers rely on 3PL service providers to deliver their products for them, so when we talk about “supplier best practice compliance”, this is extended to include 3PL suppliers too.

Don’t forget about dispatch

Dispatch is of course merely the other side of the same coin. It invariably involves the same procedures, only in reverse. The movement of products off the storage racking and into the dispatch area, the availability of staff and plant to load the vehicles, the timeliness of transport being available, all have to be taken into considerations, and as with product deliveries, product collections often involve the use of 3PL suppliers.

Setting supplier compliance standards in collaboration

Developing the right strategic relationship with all parties involved in the delivery and collection process is essential if warehouse management is to be improved. Tackled in the right way, improving warehouse management via product supplier and 3PL service providers, not only benefits the warehouse, but the suppliers as well. However in order to bring this about compliance targets need to be set in collaboration with all parties.

Allowing the specialists to specialize

The manufacturer has an important part to play in the handling of the product by designing packaging that facilitates easy, economic handling. But this component of the supply chain shouldn’t be considered in isolation. The limitations of transportation have to be taken into consideration, as well as bulk and weight, in terms of handling. As new transport methods become available, 3PL suppliers also need to be given the opportunity to provide input in order to take on board economies that might be forthcoming.

In the same way, the warehousing management has its own specialist industry knowledge, so too have the manufacturers and the 3PL service providers. By inviting all 3 parties into discussions, the most expedient and cost effective economies can be tabled for discussion and agreed.

How good warehouse management impacts positively on the supply chain

Effective supplier compliance programs can impact on many areas if they are carefully constructed. They can benefit:

  1. The overall efficiency of warehouse operations
  2. Helping to keep a close track of goods in transit
  3. Helping manufacturers to delivery on time in JIT scenarios
  4. Improve loading and unloading times
  5. Improve product recognition on receipt
  6. Help 3PL service providers to manage fleet operations for efficiently
  7. Incentivizing the supply chain

By inviting and involving everyone in the supply chain to contribute to specifying compliance targets, it incentivizes suppliers to achieve compliance with processes they have played a part in putting into place. It will make suppliers more efficient and help them to improve their vendor rating status.

Good warehousing management isn’t just beneficial to the warehouse company in question; it benefits the entire supply chain.
