Among platforms such as Tinder, Bumble, Plenty of Fish, and more, almost 35 million Americans have taken online dating for a spin. With only dating being up 44% since 2005, 59% say it’s a great way to meet new people. For your personal information, 35% of online daters are women, and 65% are men. Even more interesting, 90% of users are under years old, and 75% are under 30 years old. However, this is not to imply Americans of higher age don’t turn to online dating. 

Although being the minority in the online dating pool, 10% – or 1 in 10 – of online dating are over 55. While success in online dating can be achieved universally, regardless of your demographic, people over 70 years old have a higher risk of being frauded online. On the contrary, being younger than 70 does not eliminate you from being a target to scammers – it just lowers your chances.

In 2019, the FBI indicted 80 people for stealing $45 million through a network of schemes targeting users of online dating services. In the previous year, the median reported loss from romance scams was $2,600. Romance-related scams are the most expensive form of online fraud.
