Boating isn’t for the faint of heart, but it also doesn’t take a massive amount of skill, time or money to get started. Whether you want to head out onto saltwater or cruise around an open lake, there are plenty of good reasons to try your hand at the helm. Boating opens up plenty of opportunities for leisure and many people value this hobby as a way to enjoy and connect with nature in a completely new way.

Explore and Challenge Yourself

Whether you find the open water frightening, exciting or mysterious, heading out onto the waves can open up new horizons inside yourself. Learning how to face a new and hazardous environment helps you learn new skills and develop yourself as a person. It also gives you the chance to meet new people and learn about things that you never knew before. From learning how to tack and to understanding the components of a marine vessel such as batteries and rudders, there are many things boating can teach you. Challenge is the catalyst for growth, which is part of the appeal for many boating enthusiasts.

Opportunity to Stay Active

Adopting regular fitness habits is a core element of a healthy lifestyle, but that doesn’t mean you have to run endlessly on a treadmill or work out staring at the walls of a gym. Depending on the size of the boat and nature of the trip, boating can be a demanding physical activity that can get your blood pumping. The feeling of sunlight and clean air makes the experience all the more refreshing.

Break from Daily Routine

Between smart phones, computers and televisions, people spend a lot of time around digital devices. Aside from electronic essentials like navigational tools, boating can be a screen-free experience if you want. Pulling away from digital devices and taking a break from the daily routine is another big reason why people leave land behind to spend a day on the water.

Spend Time with Family

There are dozens of different reasons that motivate people to start boating, but spending time with family is often high on the list. Taking friends and relatives out on the water allows you to spend time with them in a new and private environment, creating an opportunity to forge stronger bonds and share new experiences together.

With so many possible emotional, psychological and health benefits, boating is a hobby that any adult should consider adopting. Life on the water isn’t for everyone, but many people are surprised to discover a hidden passion for sport or recreation once they’re out among the waves.
