Inhaling Vapor: Why would you want to?

If you’re curious about inhaling vapor, there’s a chance that you’re looking for a cigarette smoking alternative. And, if this is indeed the case, chances are vaping will only truly be an adequate substitute, and an effective partner in what can be an incredibly hard battle, if they mimic the act convincingly. Cigarettes are powerfully addictive, as we all know, because of nicotine, which alters the balance of two chemicals in the brain called dopamine and noradrenaline. This alteration causes an enjoyable rush, and can cause addiction incredibly quickly.

The many, many, chemicals in cigarettes can cause a number of diseases like lung cancer, mouth cancer, COPD, emphysema, and countless others. Although vapes can contain nicotine, especially vapes that rely on e-liquid to run, they do not contain nearly as many harmful substances as those produced by smoking tobacco, such as tar or carbon monoxide. And, the act of smoking and inhaling sucks these substances and chemicals into the lungs and subsequently into the bloodstream very quickly.

Relying on convection and conduction or wicking heating rather than outright burning and combusting material, vapes eliminate the more harmful effects of smoking cigarettes in their tracks. The act of burning a substance, or combustion, as opposed to vaping, causes chemical changes in the original product that may contain cancer causing substances along with the other harmful substances in tobacco to begin with.

Can You Inhale Vapor and What Are You Inhaling?

The short answer to the question of whether you can inhale vapor produced from a vape is yes. And, if you’re turning to a vaporizer as a means to try to quit smoking, it would seem only fit that the act of vaping keep as many similarities as possible to smoking. When you inhale vapor into your lungs, unlike smoking, you aren’t inhaling hot and more often than not toxic gases produced by burning tobacco, and this vapor is made with inhalation in mind.

So when you inhale the vapor produced by a vape, what exactly are you inhaling? Well, it depends on what product you’re vaping, of course, but all vape products will produce vapor rather than smoke. E-liquid vapor is produced when a heating mechanism heats e liquid to the point that it becomes vapor, and produces aerosol or tiny droplets of chemicals, along with nicotine and flavoring, most of which are approved for use in inhaled medications. Most e-liquids are composed of a combination of PG and VG bases – odorless and tasteless, PG stands for Propylene Glycol while VG stands for Vegetable Glycerin. 

Again, if you are using a dry herb or concentrate device, these substances are only heated to the point of forming vapor, rather than to the point at which they would combust.

Inhaling Vapor: How do you do it?

I know it seems like this might be a bit of a redundant thing to go over, but there are a few ways in which to inhale vapor, and a few techniques to learn to do so correctly, and to get the most out of your vaping experience

Mouth to Lung Vaping – 

Mouth to lung vaping (MTL) refers to inhaling vapor into your mouth and letting it sit before then inhaling into your lungs. To vape mouth to lung, take a draw on your vape device, hold it in your mouth, then inhale it into your lungs before exhaling it. Mouth to lung vaping is a technique that is similar to smoking a cigarette, so if this is your main reason for vaping, MTL might be your preferred choice. Mouth to lung vaping creates a tingling sensation in the user’s throat, known as a throat hit. Compared to direct to lung vaping, MTL produces a smoother throat hit.

E-juices that have a high PG content are the best for MTL vaping and a 50:50 and above PG/VG ratio works well with this style of vaping. Generally, mouth to lung vaping requires higher nicotine levels compared to direct to lung vaping, and as such might be the better option for those trying to quit smoking.

Direct To Lung Vaping – 

Direct to Lung, or straight to lung, vaping, then, is where a user inhales vapor directly into the lungs without letting it first sit in the mouth. Similar to taking a deep breath, DL vaping is a bit more intense and produces a harsher throat hit. This method is perhaps more common, but might not be the best option for anyone looking to quit smoking, and is generally preferred for users trying to produce a large quantity of vapor.

It is best to use vapes that heat e-liquid at high temperatures for this kind of vaping, and as such work better with liquids that have a higher viscosity. Using e-liquids with a higher VG content is ideal for this type of vaping since they are indeed more viscous. 

While both of these methods can be used to inhale vapor, it’s worth remembering that you also don’t need to inhale at all, even to achieve a nicotine hit. Nicotine can indeed be absorbed through the soft tissue in the mouth, so if you would like to simply hold the vapor in your mouth and exhale without it travelling to your lungs, this is also another viable option. So, whatever you prefer, and whatever your needs, there are boundless vaping options out there. But, before making that all important vaporizer purchase, consider your unique needs and what you hope to achieve from vaping to make sure you get a product that will tick all the boxes.
