While we’d all like to think that nothing bad would ever happen to ruin the holiday season for our friends and family, the truth is that harm, danger, and accidents still occur even during the most wonderful time of the year. In fact, there are certain types of accidents that even become more likely to happen during the winter months. And since the last thing anyone wants to deal with as they’re preparing for the holidays is the aftermath of some kind of accident, here are three tips that will help you and your family stay safe around the holidays.

Don’t Neglect Washing Your Hands

Part of keeping yourself safe over the holidays means keeping yourself healthy. As cold and flu season come along in full force, it’s now more important than ever to take the necessary precautions that will help you stay healthy. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one of the best things you can do to fight off illnesses is to wash your hands. By washing your hands for at least 20 seconds during cold and flu season, you’ll be able to help with stopping the spread of germs. Especially if you know someone who has the flu or you or someone you live with is at particular risk for getting sick, it’s vital that you wash your hands frequently to kill off any germs that could cause you to develop an infection or illness.

Take Care In The Kitchen

For many families, much of their holiday celebrations revolve around what they’re creating in the kitchen. But as one of the most dangerous rooms within your home, you’re going to want to take extra care when in the kitchen of the holidays. According to SafeKids.org, you should ensure that you’re keeping hot foods or appliances away from young children. Additionally, try to keep a fire extinguisher handy in the event that your heat source gets out of control and causes a small fire in your kitchen.

Hide Your Gifts

The holidays are often a time where people share gifts with one another. And while you might cherish the thought of giving gifts to those you care for, what no one wants is to have those gifts stolen from you before you have the chance to give them to their intended recipient. So to keep this from happening to you, Hillary Johnston, a contributor to SafeWise.com, advises that you hide your gifts away from the doors or windows in your car or home. By keeping these things out of sight, they won’t be able to tempt any passersby who might be looking to make a quick buck.

To keep yourself and your loved ones safe this holiday season, consider implementing some of the tips mentioned above.
