Getting a college degree is usually enough to get you an entry-level job and kick start your career. You can also get post-graduate qualifications thereafter to grow career or even tee off to a completely new career directions. All this is nice and dandy but there are additional skills that you could learn on your own which could pay off forever.

There is skills such as emotional intelligence and empathy that no everyone can master which can propel your career and life to staggering heights. With the evolving workplace, these skills are in the demand more than ever.


It the digital era, basic coding skills are essential knowledge for everyone who wants to keep up and reap rewards from the ever changing technological landscape. Programming is not only about knowing HTML, Java and Python, it’s a way of thinking that allows developers to see things outside of the box and find solutions to problems facing the world.

Knowing how to develop ideas into a website, application or algorithm is a very important trait in today’s world.

Some of the most successful people in the world are multilingual. Being fluent in more than one languages opens many doors for jobs and business and makes you an interesting conversationalist.

Besides being able to communicate with more people, a new language introduces you to an otherwise new culture and makes you more open-minded.

EQ is the ability to understand the emotional impact of your words and deeds on other people and use it to your advantage to forge the best relationships in both your personal and professional life.

Closely tied to EQ is empathy. Empathy teaches you treat other people how you would want to be treated.

Time management

There is so much to do and little time to do all of them. Time management helps prioritise your activities and lessens the amount of time you waste on decision making.

Spending a lot of time weighing one decision against the other results in decision fatigue and time wastage making you have even less time for the things that matter.

It is therefore important to plan your time such neither you professional or family life suffers. This comes from prioritizing the stuff that matters and eliminating time wasting activities from your schedule.

Learning the cost of your time could change the way you spend your time. If, for instance, you earn $40 per hour, then it makes better sense to delegate your grocery shopping for $10 than make a drive to the grocery store.
