Kids are always after something. When they’re young, it’s the latest toy or game that all of their friends have, but as they start to get a bit older, those requests get larger and larger. There comes a time in every parent’s life when their teenager reaches their sixteenth birthday and wants to learn to drive. The inevitable next step is asking you to buy them a car. It’s a big expense and some parents aren’t sure that it’s the best idea. There are arguments on both sides so to help you make a decision, here are some of the pros and cons of buying your teenager a car.

Money

Money is one of the major concerns. A car isn’t cheap. Some parents will just say no outright because it costs too much. The thing is, there are some things that are more important than money, and your children is one of them. Even if you don’t have all of the cash spare, you can easily get finance from places like auto.loan to cover it. If you think that the pros outweigh the cons, try not to let the money issue cloud your judgement. Another problem in terms of money is teaching your kids to value the things that they have. Some parents worry that if you buy them a car, they won’t have a realistic concept of money and they’ll go through life thinking that things are just going to fall into their lap. The truth is, kids will only think like this if it becomes a pattern. Children that have been raised to know the value of money will not be affected by one large gift. However, if you’re buying them expensive things all of the time then it’s a different story.

Independence

Children that are smothered by their parents will often have development problems and they’ll struggle in later life. They’re going to go out on their own at some point so trying to stifle them now is just delaying the inevitable. Giving them a car is the perfect way to afford them some independence and start their transition into adulthood. It’s something that is all theirs and they can use it to express their personality. It also means that they aren’t going to be asking you for lifts every five minutes as well.

Responsibility

Buying your kids a pet is a great way to teach them to be responsible and so is buying them a car. If you get them a car, make it clear to them that they are responsible for maintaining it and buying fuel. It’s a big responsibility to have and your teenager will relish the chance to be treated like an adult. They’ll learn some important lessons when they spend all of their cash and can’t afford the fuel that they need. In these situations, it’s important that you don’t bail them out. Otherwise, they’ll never learn their lesson and they’ll come running to you every time they’re in trouble.

Before you buy them a car, think long and hard about how it will affect them. It will do some kids a lot of good, but others might not benefit.
