How to Avoid Gaining Weight in Your Freshman Year of College

Gaining weight during college is not unusual. Starting a new school can be incredibly stressful and time-consuming, leaving you with little time to think about eating healthily and getting some exercise. During their first year, many students experience what is known as the ‘Freshman 15’, which basically involves putting on around fifteen pounds worth of weight as they adjust to their new lifestyle, which isn’t always helped by drinking more on social occasions or turning to take-out more often than usual. Students who have just graduated from high school are often used to living with their parents and eating meals with the family, therefore, having to cook for themselves every day can be a big step up and lead to more unhealthy food choices. Thankfully, there’s no need to gain weight in college – these top tips will help you keep the extra pounds off.

Tip #1. Stock Up on Healthy Snacks

Many college students are constantly on the go. In between attending classes, revising at home for your online MDY degree and working part-time to earn some extra money, you might not have the time to put together a healthy, home-cooked meal. Luckily, switching your unhealthy snacks for more nutritious ones is a simple solution that can help you combat weight gain. Instead of turning to chips or chocolate, stock up on fruit, veggies, nuts, and healthy snacks such as rice crackers, which you can eat throughout the day to keep your hunger at bay and give you the energy that you need.

Tip #2. Pack Your Lunches

As a student, you may not spend that much time at home, unless you are studying for a remote program such as a masters in diplomacy from Norwich University. If you’ve found yourself buying your lunch from a local fast food vendor more and more often, then this won’t just be hurting your weight but also your purse! Taking some time each evening to prepare a packed lunch for the next day will help you to get into healthier eating habits, as well as save you money. Healthy sandwiches, salads, pasta, and soups are all easy and quick to make whilst being nutritious, too!

Tip #3. Exercise Often

You may be wondering when you’re going to get the time to exercise when you have so much work to do for your online diplomacy degree. Luckily, the good news is that you don’t have to commit to hours in the gym to get the physical activity that you need whilst at college. Getting a bicycle, for example, is a great way to keep fit whilst you are getting around, and cycling to class is free, unlike driving or taking public transport. When you have a break, going for a short, ten-minute walk can also be a great way to stay active and will also improve your energy and ability to focus when you return. You can also try yoga, which will help with strengthening and toning your body and can be done easily from home using YouTube tutorials.
