The Dangers of Drowsy Driving

Let’s face it, most of us have at some point driven while tired or at least driven while a little distracted. Eyes droop, vision blurs, and we might find ourselves having trouble even focusing on the road. If you’re unlucky, you might even slide into the oncoming lane or graze the sidewalk. If you’re lucky, you won’t end up in an accident or injure anyone either.

It’s best not to play with fire when it comes to driving. A large percentage of people that own vehicles have admitted to driving while sleepy at some point, and there is research to support the idea that driving while sleepy is equally as dangerous as driving under the influence and could carry the same charges. Next time you tell yourself “I can do this, it’s just a little more” or “I can drive fine while tired, it’s no problem!”, think about these following and points and play it safe.

It’s not just your own life that’s at risk

You might be reckless and think that you’re going to be safe within your vehicle if you drive tired, but that’s never the case and it’s very stupid to assume so. If you have difficulty focusing and find yourself veering off the road, then it could be an innocent pedestrian that pays the price because you refused to take a break and rest your eyes for a moment. Not only that, but driving tired on a highway can cause accidents that pile up into car crashes that involve dozens of vehicles. You might be reckless with your own life, but don’t put other people in danger as a result of your carelessness!

Anti-sleep and caffeine pills are dangerous

In the past, it was popular for people to take anti-sleep pills in order to stave off their tiredness. This is why there are so many gas stations that serve coffee—to give you a caffeine boost in order to keep you awake for the remainder of your journey. In fact, anti-sleep pills were popular among truckers that drove long distances across the country or even the continent as a job. However, they are no substitute for sleep and should be avoided at all costs.

You will have no excuse in the event of an accident

Because it’s considered as bad as drunk driving, driving while drowsy carries similar charges and you could have your license suspended and you might even be fined a hefty sum of money. It doesn’t matter if you are a truck driver carrying important cargo or trying to get home for your child’s birthday—driving while tired is never a good idea. If you are a truck driver, then you might want to seek expert advice from truck accident attorneys if you’re someone that regularly takes anti-sleep pills and caffeine in order to make your deliveries because sooner or later, you’re going to end up in an accident and you will regret it.

If you are tired, pull over and rest your eyes at the nearest safe place. Never drive while drowsy, and if you do, you’ll have to face the same consequences as someone driving while under the influence.
