Though you may have a gargantuan candy hangover this morning from dabbling in your kiddo’s Halloween plunder last night after they went to bed, there’s another holiday kicking off today that has many sweet treats of a different kind.

Día De Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is observed each year on November 1 & 2 in Mexico and other countries around the world, to honor loved ones who’ve died while beckoning them back to celebrate with the living. This holiday isn’t scary or sad at all—just a celebration of the circle of life!

The traditions of the holiday have roots in ancient Aztec rituals. Beloved ancestors and friends are welcomed home to the party with their favorite foods, drinks, dances, and music. Participants visit their loved one’s grave sites, and build ofrendas or altars that hold their ancestor’s favored items like pastries, pictures, flowers, and personal mementos.

Read on to learn more about how you can throw your own Día De Los Muertos party to honor and celebrate your loved ones.
