Wind, solar, and geothermal energy are all cleaner than burning fossil fuels, but combined they still make up less than 6% of America’s power production. Hydroelectric, which is not without its perils, produces nearly 7% of America’s power. The other 88%+ comes from various forms of fossil fuels, including coal and natural gas.
If you’ve ever hiked to the top of a mountain and seen the trees that look like they are burned, you know the devastation acid rain can cause. Burning coal for power not only causes acid rain, it also adds to mercury pollution and other air quality problems. Yet since we are sitting on mountains of coal we continue to dig it up and burn it for electricity- coal is responsible for 39% of our nation’s power.
There are better ways to produce clean energy. We just have to take the time to refine and implement them. Learn more about green tech from this infographic!
