The fashion industry has a huge problem- sustainability. Because clothing has become so cheap to produce and to buy, Americans purchase 400% more clothing annually than they did just a few decades ago. This is leading to more pollution from the production side- both in agrichemicals and fabric dyeing wastewater- as well as more material in the waste stream.

Currently the United States alone is producing 11 million pounds of textile waste per year. The average American household spends nearly $2000 a year on clothing. Most clothing is worn a few times and cast aside for the latest and greatest thing to come out. That means a lot of clothing is being produced with the expectation it won’t be around for very long.

Fashion brands can do a lot to improve their sustainability. For starters, materials that take less energy and pollute less during production, such as bamboo and recycled plastics, can be utilized in order to create more sustainable base materials.
