It seems there’s always some new study coming out about whether alcohol is, in fact, good for you. There is evidence on both sides. On the one hand alcohol is involved in a lot of traffic fatalities- 31% of all traffic fatalities are linked to drunk driving. But responsible alcohol use has been shown repeatedly to be very good for you. It can decrease your chances of developing Type II Diabetes or heart disease and people who engage in moderate alcohol consumption are 23% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
Humans have been consuming alcohol in various forms since long before history was being recorded. Early humans were consuming fermented fruits and it didn’t take long for them to start fermenting things in a controlled manner. Ancient Egyptians gave slaves a stipend of beer every day, and the Ancient Roman Congress ordered wine production for the citizens.
