When you think of LSD, do you think of a bunch of hippies tripping at Burning Man? It was originally developed in the late 1930s to help treat psychiatric disorders, and it didn’t become widely used as a recreational drug for several decades after that. It was outlawed completely in 1970 by the Controlled Substances Act. Now LSD is making a comeback as a viable psychiatric treatment option with recent studies into its function and efficacy.
LSD causes brain function in areas that are typically shut off. This can enable the reestablishment of previously cut off neural pathways which could in turn help the mentally ill break out of rigid thought patterns.
