Would you drive 45 minutes on a weeknight just to visit a new microbrewery? Are you always lusting after a rich, exciting stout or a breezy, refreshing pilsner? Drinking beer is a delicious physical experience, so you might have never thought about enhancing the activity with technology. It’s time to start, because these apps will bring your beer game to a whole new level.

Beer Buddy

This app is perfect for those days when you’re in the beer store feeling bombarded by all the different options available to you. Pull out the app and start scanning bar codes; it has a database of more than 200,000 beers, each with user reviews and specific information. You can also search for beers you find on tap or search via location if you want to find a specific beer. It’ll also show you lists of the app’s top-rated beers.

BJCP Styles

Even if you don’t know what the Beer Judge Certification Program is, you’re going to love the app, which serves as a guide for all the questions you’ve ever had about beer. From beginner questions, like understanding the difference between an ale and a lager, to specifics, like wanting to find an example of a specific style of beer, this app has your back. This app will fill you with all the knowledge you could ask for about beer — be sure to share it with your friends!

Untappd

Untappd is the social network answer for anyone who loves Instagramming his or her beer. You can check in at different drinkeries, post and rate the beers you’re drinking, and check out what your friends are drinking (and where!). This app is especially good for phones that have high-resolution cameras, like the all-metal HTC One M9 from T-Mobile, whose fast 4G network lets you share the photos you take of each beer you’ve loved! Untappd links with your Facebook and Twitter accounts, allowing you to let the rest of your social network in on the fun, too. Plus, it’ll show you cool bars and new beers near your current location.

Elixir

Users of this app describe the experience as Yelp for alcoholic drinks. When you’re on Elixir, instead of searching for reviews by establishment, you can search by individual drink. This is awesome for beer drinkers, because you can search for places serving a specific beer and keep track of the beers you and your friends have loved (and hated). Plus, if you want to switch it up one night and do cocktail hour instead, you won’t need to download a different app.

BreweryMap

As with many of the other apps on this list, you can use BreweryMap to search breweries near you, look for specific establishments, or filter your search to look for specific types of venues, like microbreweries. But what sets BreweryMap apart is its road trip feature. You can craft an entire trip based around the breweries you want to visit — or find breweries along your planned route. Either way, getting to the in-laws’ house just became a lot more fun.

TapHunter

Sometimes it’s fun going into a bar and experimenting with the new beers on tap. Other times, you know what you want, and you merely need to know where to go to drink it. TapHunter has live lists of what the bars in your area have on tap. Follow beers that you love to find out when they come on tap again, and follow venues you adore so you know every time they switch up the drink menu.

These apps aren’t just for hardcore beer enthusiasts. Even if you just want to learn a little more about why certain beers taste good to you, downloading a few of these apps will help you out. What’s more, their social media features make them a great resource for remembering favorite venues in different cities or exploring somewhere new during a visit or after you move.
