Four Strange Foods To Add To Your Diet

When it comes to eating eating your fruits and vegetables, it’s like you have some certain standbys that you buy each time you go to the store, like lettuce and oranges. When was the last time you tried something different, like a hairy little fruit that has a taste that resembles strawberries. Or, some weird hybrid of two other fruits that you generally like on their own?

The next time you go to the grocery store, don’t just grab the usual suspects. Instead, take some time to peruse the other options in the produce section and try something new. You never know, you just might find a new favorite.

Figs are an excellent fruit that don’t often get as much attention as they should, at least not in American cuisine. They are a bit seedy, but the seeds are easy to chew. Think back to a time when you tried a fig newton cookie, with it’s crunchiness but sweetness. This is what you get with figs.

In order to make them a healthy option, avoid the cookies. Figs make excellent jam, and even taste good mixed with a salad. It is a very versatile little fruit.

Another small, fun, and healthy fruit option is the kiwi. The kiwifruit is easy to find in nearly any produce section, but most people are scared off by that brown, fuzzy exterior. The fruit inside, however, is very sweet and kind of tastes similar to strawberries.

You can eat kiwi on it’s own, mix it in a fruit salad, or even have it on a fruit pizza. You can get creative with them too, by dipping them in chocolate, or creating kiwi-kebabs with other fruit.

You’ve likely seen these little orange looking citrus fruits in a store at some time, and you may have wondered what the heck they were. Well, they aren’t mini-oranges, but they are a citrus fruit derived from Asia.

You can eat them raw, and yes, you eat the whole thing. The rhind has a sweet taste, while the pulp inside is acidic. They are also used in preserves.

Pluots aren’t seen around as much as some of these other choices, and they can often carry a pretty hefty price tag. But, if you haven’t tried one yet, it’s worth the cost. Like it’s name should tell you, it is a cross between a plum and an apricot.

They are also, sometimes, called plumcots. They are a very rich and sweet flavored fruit. If you like plums or apricots, you’re sure to be delighted at the taste of this strange fruit. Have them alone or mix them in your fruit salad.
