Teleportation was used to save money

During the early days of Star Trek, the creators decided to use teleportation in the episodes to save money. They determined it was much cheaper than creating large planet scenes for landing spaceships.

Star Trek created the first mobile phones

The original flip phone design was based on the communicator devices used in the first series of Star Trek. The show also played a hand in creating the first e-Reader devices. There is an early episode in which Captain Kirk uses one in the medical bay.
