Obscure Batman Facts

Pretty much everyone has heard of Batman, the caped crusader who sacrifices his own safety to protect the citizens of Gotham City. And, of course, he does this with super cool gadgets and out-of-this-world cars.

But, even those who fancy themselves as having “bat brilliance” might not know everything about this superhero. Because the franchise involves comics, cartoons, TV shows, and movies, there are a lot of oddball facts floating around. Let’s look at ten of them.

Batman is Popular
Batman is a favorite among comic book readers. According to the Guardian, a poll in Comic Heroes Magazine found that Batman was voted the number one superhero. He finished ahead of Spider-man (who took second place) and Superman (who was an un-super third).

The Batman Movie
Per Vulture Magazine, Tim Burton was offered the chance to direct Batman after he scored success with, of all things, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. He, however, didn’t like the script, believing it was too similar to a Superman story line. So, it was completely rewritten before shooting began.

The script wasn’t the only controversial area: Michael Keaton wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms by fans. Over 50,000 letters were sent to Warner Brothers protesting Keaton’s casting in the lead role. The fans feared that Keaton, largely known for comedic roles, would be unable to cultivate the darkness and seriousness Batman embodied. Other actors who were considered for the lead included Alec Baldwin, Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, Tom Selleck, and Bill Murray. The latter, in particular, was an odd choice considering the backlash regarding actors known for comedy.

The role of Vicky Vale – though not necessarily controversial – wasn’t always Kim Basinger’s. Sean Young was originally cast, but a week before shooting, she fell off a horse and was subsequently replaced.

Leo as Robin
Though Chris O’Donnell was eventually cast as Robin for the movie Batman Returns, Leonardo DiCaprio was the other top contender.

Something Fishy
According to What Culture LTD, Jim Carrey, once he was cast as the Riddler, wanted to have a question mark shaved into the top of his scalp. The only reason he didn’t go through with it was because he was due in court for his divorce proceedings.

Michelle Pfeiffer, cast as Cat Woman, was also willing to go the extra mile for her role…or at least her life-like dummy was. In the scene where Selina Kyles is found surrounded by cats, Pfeiffer was replaced by a tuna-covered dummy. The tuna was the only way the cats would hang around the body.

Bats Get a Cameo
Despite Christopher Nolan directing several of the Batman franchise movies, actual bats only appeared in one of his films. Per IMDB, Batman Begins used bats to overwhelm the SWAT team.

Toothy Dedication
Adam West, who played Batman in the television series, showed his dedication by having a cosmetic dentist put a Batman logo on one of his molars.

Comic Book Cronies
In one of the comic books, Superman and Batman team up to solve the mystery involving Lex Luthor’s stolen kryptonite ring. After Superman gets the ring back, he gives it to Batman for safekeeping. Superman says that he does this because he isn’t sure if he will always stay good and – if he happens to go bad – will need Batman to defeat him. While Superman may be super human, he doesn’t seem to have super self-confidence.
