About to hit their 19th year, the Mobile News Awards 2014 is the must-attend event for anyone who is anyone in the mobile industry. With major players such as O2, Samsung and Microsoft in attendance, it’s a veritable who’s who of the international mobile business.

Hosted this year by comedian Greg Davis, the awards have been described as “the BRITs of the mobile industry” by Crispin Thomas, MD of Talk Me Through, which should give you a pretty good idea of what a big deals these awards are.

A look back
The ceremony takes place at the prestigious London Hilton on Park Lane, with the announcements taking place Thursday 13th March. With sponsors including Elite, Sony, O2, EE and Anova, it’s set to be a night of glitz and glam for all attending.

The awards are shaped to celebrate every area of mobile, for both the user at home and the user in the office, with multiple awards covering a range of categories. This balance between the regular customer and businesses ensures that companies are tested on their ability to satisfy all customers in a variety of ways.

Previous winners include Uplands for Customer Service, Excell Group for Business Solutions Provider, and the Nokia Lumia 920 for Innovative Handset. However, it’s not just the phone industry that enjoys plaudits at the ceremony.

In 2013, the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 lost out to Samsung Galaxy Camera in the Innovative Product category, while the Advertising Campaign category recognises our love of a good ad, with EE winning that year.

What to expect
With the big winners of 2013 being Samsung winning multiple awards including Manufacturer and Industry Personality of the Year with employee Simon Stanford, can we expect Samsung to win big again in 2014?

A spokesperson from popular mobile phone repair company helpingu2save said: “As the market competition gets hotter, there is almost no way to tell who is going to win what award as every race is so tight. The reason being that every company is constantly trying to keep as well as win new customers by releasing ever more innovative phones and software for those phones”.

All bets are off for this year’s awards, though there are a few we’re expecting to see have a great night on the 13th. EE won the Industry Advance award in 2013, and chances are they could be in it to win it again as more and more customers enjoy greater 4G access. Meanwhile, Phones4U came second place for the Online Retailer award last year, but thanks to a greater commitment to the online space, the smart money’s on the company to get the award in the bag in 2014.
