How to Host a Super Bowl Party

Super Bowl XLVIII is almost here! Are you gearing up to throw a crazy party? A stellar soiree requires serious planning, like coordinating entertainment, putting together a great food and drink spread and organizing entertainment (besides the game and entertaining commercials). Here are the most important ingredients for the perfect Super Bowl party.

Decorate Your Space

Make your party extra festive by putting up some decorations around your entryway and around the viewing area. Blow up balloons in the teams’ colors and string streamers around the room. If you’re really creative, look for confetti shaped like footballs and helmets, and sprinkle it around your serving table and coffee tables. Or, if you really want to wow your guests, make coasters out of AstroTurf. Shop online or look at your local hardware store for supplies. Here are some easy, printable decoration ideas.

Arrange plenty of seating around your television and make sure your sound system is ample to project the broadcast throughout the entertaining area. Set up surround sound if you don’t already have it in place. You’ll want the sound of the game to permeate your house. Bring in extra chairs from your spare rooms (desk chairs or arm chairs) and toss some pillows or cushions on the ground for the kids to sit on. Consider turning on the game in your kitchen or den, so your guests can spread out if they like.

Plan Your Food and Drink Menus

The food and drinks are the highlights of your party! Plan a menu that blends standard football fare with innovative touches to accommodate every picky palate.

You could opt for a menu of mini bites, which allow everyone to fill up a plate and enjoy their foods while mingling. Offer hamburger sliders, wonton cups, popcorn shrimp and other tiny treats. Or, try to mix things up this year by researching a new cheesy nachos recipe. Some recipes put a twist on the classic nachos recipes, such as incorporating BBQ sauce or adding different kinds of meats, like lamb. If you choose an extra saucy nachos or wings recipe, stock your serving area with wet wipes and paper towels so your guests can clean off their hands and mouth after enjoying their food.

Play around with different cocktails, and offer “mocktails” (cocktails without the alcohol) for the kids and designated drivers of the group. Try a virgin mojito or a blackberry lavender lemonade recipe; these fresh beverages will quench your guests’ thirsts after a round at the buffet table.

Don’t forget about staples like beer, bottled water, potato skins and wings. Park a big cooler or a mini fridge by your viewing area, packed with ice to keep drinks cold.

Consider Additional Entertainment

Sure, the main focus is on the big game. But what about the kids and teenagers who can’t sit still for the whole four quarters? To keep guests of all ages entertained, set up some additional activities and games. For example, keep a few footballs handy so kids can toss them around in the backyard. Or, set up a video game system in the play room or guest room.

Your Super Bowl party guests may like to participate in some fun games during time-outs or commercial breaks. Set up corn hole, croquet or even beer pong in the backyard or garage so they can blow off steam before returning to the game.
