Ever thought about online and offline dating from the perspective of astrophysicists? Let’s start with the Drake Equation (N = N* x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L). This was created for estimating the number of alien civilizations that may exist in our galaxy, but it can also be used to estimate potential girlfriends. Peter Backus, a 31-year-old grad student, tweaked the Drake Equation to formulate the Dating Equation: G = N * x fW x fL x fA x fU x fB x [fM x fS x fl].
This new equation is centered on some minimum requirements: the individual is a single woman in London between the ages of 24-34 with a university degree who is attractive and mutually attracted with similar interests (gets along). What this equation ultimately tells us is the number of girls who meet these basic requirements. According to Backus, there are 189 potentially realistic girlfriends in all of London. How about dating opportunities in clubs as opposed to the online sphere? 0.014 of girls in a club are potential girlfriends. On the other hand 63 of girls online are potential girlfriends. Overall, dating sites are 2025 times more effective than going to clubs.
