It’s been eight months since Derrick Jenkins last saw his mother. Last Thursday night, the 13-year-old got a surprise that made up for the time they spent apart.

Lt. Col. Cotina Jenkins-Sellers just returned to San Antonio from Kuwait.

With military-precision planning, she sneaked into Legacy Middle School on Thursday while Derrick was playing basketball.

The coaches had arranged it so Derrick would shoot a free throw as his mother walked onto the court to surprise him.

Derrick turned around and was so shocked, he fell to the ground and his mother hugged him.

Lt. Col. Cotina Jenkins-Sellers was the squadron commander of the 386 Force Support Squadron.
