Working in a field you love, in a career you adore, is what most people dream about. If you’re not doing this, chances are good that at some point you’re going to suffer from burnout at work.

When it happens, you might not notice it until it’s too late. So look for the following critical signs.

1. Your impatience with coworkers is constant

It’s impossible not to feel a bit of irritation toward your coworkers or boss from time to time. You’re all different and you’re all on top of each other all day long; that much togetherness will certainly cause a bit of annoyance.

However, if your annoyance is constant and doesn’t go away for days or weeks at a time, it could be a sign you’re suffering from burnout. If you find it impossible to enjoy working with these people anymore, it’s time to move on.

2. You’re no longer motivated

Everyone has off days, during which you could think of a million things you’d rather be doing than sitting at your desk. However, when you find it impossible to motivate yourself to get anything done at the office anymore, it’s a sign you’re suffering from burnout.

3. Your physical health is not good

Job stress and burnout can take many forms, including the physical. You might notice you’re beginning to experience frequent headaches, back aches, and other ailments that simply won’t go away no matter how much attention and care you give them.

They could be caused by the stress of going to work at a job you dislike. Take note of how you feel and whether or not your symptoms seem related to other issues, such as pregnancy or health problems. If not, you have to consider burnout to be the issue.

Applying for new jobs

If you’re burned out at work and in need of a change, start applying for positions with companies you want to work for in the field you want to be. To help you get a leg up on the competition, prepare for interviews by choosing professionally appropriate clothing, researching the company, and coming up with different answers to difficult questions in advance.

Job stress is one thing; burnout is another. They’re not the same, and if you confuse the two, it can lead to further emotional, physical, and mental damage to your person. Don’t stick with a job you don’t love just because you think you have no other choice.
