I spent last weekend with the FlyGrip Gravity and since I have my phone in my hand or in my pocket 90% of the time, we spent some quality time together. Take a look below to check my thoughts on the improvements over the previously reviewed model.
First off, here’s how their website describes the product…

Experience
First off, installation is easy and so is removal. I reviewed the flygrip back in February http://infotainmentnews.net/2013/02/14/hands-on-flygrip/ and decided to remove the old one from the case before trying out the new one. It was not all that difficult and the leftover residue was as expected. Nothing major but there was a visible outline that remained. Anyway, after a quick cleaning, I applied the new one. Before you install, be sure to experiment with exactly where you want to place it so you have your optimum viewing angle (when using as a stand) or where you’re most comfortable holding the phone (when using while holding the phone). Once it’s stuck to the phone, you can remove it, but better to get it right the first time.
I found that the part of the device that covered my fingers felt like it fit better than the previous model. It’s larger (longer) so that might have something to do with it. I also liked the magnetic ‘clip’ – rather than having plastic clip to hold the device closed. I assume this will last longer and be less likely to break than plastic.
I happened to be at a lengthy card game over the weekend and found the FlyGrip stand feature to be very helpful. I could look at my phone, check scores, check mail, tweet, or whatever and have a great viewing angle (much better than lying flat on the table top). The clip does add some height to the overall device and since I keep my phone in my pocket I don’t want any more height than necessary. The FlyGrip seemed fine. I didn’t really notice much of a difference, which is great.
Competition
As for similar products – I found these (no Hands On reviews though):
- SlingGrip (http://www.thingsling.com/shop/). does not appear to have the ability to act as a stand like the FlyGrip.
- LAZY-HANDS – Again, it’ll hold your phone but does not have a stand.
- BunkerRing – this one seems close in functionality but the manufacturer site seemed to be down. Still on sale at amazon though.
None of these appear to do what FlyGrip does as well as it does it. The BunkerRing is close but I think that if I were placing the weight of a tablet or even a phone on just one finger, it would start to hurt after a while. FlyGrip hugs the fingers nicely and shape keeps you from having hard edges cut in to your tired hands.
Conclusion
I like this next generation FlyGrip. The first one was nice but the Gravity improves on an already quality product. The site (flygrip.com) lists the device at 29.95 which is still pretty reasonable and if you are an avid smart phone user who wants a little more comfort (especially for those big phones), I’d suggest looking in to the FlyGrip for your self.
