Every generation of Hollywood starlets has its trends and beauty fads. With starlets and musicians as diverse as Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus, this generation is no exception. Among the new trends are classics like red pouts and non-traditional crazes like pink and ombré tresses.

Pink Hair
Perhaps one of the craziest trends right now is pink hair. Popularized in the early 2000s by the singer Pink, pink hair is having a bit more than its 15 minutes in the sun. “Teenage Dream” songstress Katy Perry has sported a lot of shades over the years, but she recently went a step further with her new bubblegum pink locks. Just like Kirsten Dunst’s look in Marie Antoinette pink tresses can lend a pop of color to a formal ensemble. Other stars to go pink include Nicki Minaj, Carrie Underwood, Snooki and Rachel McAdams.

Thick Black Liner
Katy Perry is leading the pack again with her endorsement of the thick black liner trend. Others sporting the bold trend are Demi Lovato, Adele, Zooey Deschanel and the ubiquitous Kim Kardashian. “Hunger Games” starlet Elizabeth Banks rocked the look with smoky grays on the red carpet for an awards show. For a bolder or more retro look, like Adele, InStyle recommends using a liquid liner (and Q-tips to clean up mistakes).

Bright Red Lips
Classic glamour girl Taylor Swift is rocking the vampy red pout look. A nod back in time to Old Hollywood, red lipstick is making a comeback among this generation’s young starlets. British songstress Adele took the 40s Hollywood look all the way at the Grammy’s this year. Rocking dark eye makeup with false lashes, blonde curls and a killer red pout, she represents the new and old generations. Everybody’s favorite actress, the daring Angelina Jolie, knocked the trend out of the park at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. Few lip trends do her famous pout justice, but the red suits her deliciously.

Cat eyes
Taking a page from Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns, today’s young starlets are sporting sexy, yet subtle, cat eyes. Zoe Saldana’s winged peepers sparkled backstage at New York Fashion Week. The perfectly executed cat eye was created by makeup artist Vera Steimberg for the premiere of Zoe’s new film. Cameron Diaz’s makeup artist also went for the feline look. The dramatic cat eyes set off her bob and stunning earrings. While you can achieve this look with a liquid liner (a lá Adele’s bold retro style eyeliner), you can also use a liner brush and black eye shadow for a soft effect. Start the line near the center of your lid, and slowly draw it out towards the outer rim (those using eyeshadow may need to wet their brush). Once you reach the outer rim of the eye, draw the brush upward slightly. Cosmopolitan offers helpful tips and tricks to help you perfect this technique.

Ombré Hair
Why choose between blond or brunette when you can do both? Check out Rachel Bilson’s ombre locks to see just how gorgeous this “grown out” look can be. The ombre effect is achieved by letting dark roots show at the top with lighter ends at the bottom. Alternatively, you can try out a highlighting technique called “balayage”. Rather than setting highlights into the hair at the root—as is typically the case with foil highlights—balayage calls for highlights to be painted on to the hair, with much of the dye focusing on the ends of hair (adding more dimension and a more natural look). Lady Gaga and Gwyneth Paltrow are also sporting ombre locks. Lady Gaga referred to the look as “fox blond” because the hair color resembles a fox’s red and white-tipped tail.

Textured and wavy hair
Young Hollywood is waving goodbye to the pin straight tresses of the 90s. Miley Cyrus personifies the trend with her signature silk brown locks. Demi Lovato takes texture to a new level with her gorgeous waves. To achieve this just-rolled-out-of-bed-looking-fabulous look, curl hair around a 1 inch to 1.5 inch curling iron. Alternate curling hair in different directions, leaving the last inch or so of hair away from the curling iron. Let the curls sit while they cool off. If your hair is thinner, shake out hair with your fingers and avoid using a brush. If this isn’t enough texture for you, use a texturizing spray, like Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray—just scrunch and go!

Today’s starlets and musicians are taking inspiration from Old Hollywood in their makeup and hair choices. Pink hair may not stand the test of time, but makes a fun statement. Conversely, red pouts, cat eyes, thick liner and soft waves never go out of style. Which starlets will start trends that reverberate into the future? Only time will tell.
