Five of the Best Pub Games to Accompany Your Beer

Five of the Best Pub Games to Accompany Your Beer 1Although the British pub trade has been dying a slow death over the last few years due to the public smoking ban and a decrease in price of alcoholic drinks from supermarkets, there are still plenty of good reasons to make a trip down to your local.

The local is a good place to meet new people and have a laugh; they can offer you home cooked food and of course some light entertainment with quizzes, music and live bands.

We are however going to talk about another reason to go down to the pub more often and this is the pub games that are available to play. There are a number of activities that the lucky pub may offer in order to keep their customers happy and entertained.

Easily one of the more common games you will see in a pub next to darts, this game is always fun and brings lots of competitiveness with it. You will notice that many pubs actually run their very own teams and compete against other pubs in the area on a league basis.

There is nothing better than popping down the pub with some friends and playing different types of games on the table such as “nine ball pool” or “killer”.

This is the other more common type of game you will find down the local public house. It might seem like a little bit of a risk to give men and women who have had a few drinks some sharp and pointy darts to throw at a board; however the majority of the time there is no harm done except to the walls of the pub.

This game is also played in a league format with pubs creating their own teams of regular customers who travel to and accept visits from other pubs in the area.

Some pubs even offer poker tournaments on certain days of the week, with the ever popular card game usually being a big winner amongst customers. There are obviously a number of different variations of poker these days, yet each one offers its very own blend of strategy and mind games.

Of course, depending on where you live, you may want to find out if gambling is actually legal, although there is not always a cash prize.

Board Games
Many pubs, especially the more country variations, will also have a few boards’ games behind the bar such as Jenga, Chess, Backgammon and Checkers. Each of these games has their very own qualities from fun playing games like Jenga whilst some require a lot of thinking and strategy.

Dominos may not be the most common of games you will find in a pub, yet there are a few that still stock this delightful game. This game has a huge history with it being believed that it was a descendent of the Chinese version of the game which was played during the 11th century. Just make sure you have a big enough table as sometimes the domino trails can go on for a while.

Whichever one you decide on, you can be sure that the board game can bring a little bit more enjoyment to your quit beer down the pub.

So as you can see, these games are just one of the many reasons that you should try and support your local pubs. They are part of the country’s history and it would be a real shame to see the whole industry fall on its feet. So if you want to do your part in helping them to thrive once more, just make a weekly trip for a couple of drinks and a quick game or two.

Lucas Conner is a writer who believes that pub culture survives on games being offered by landlords such as darts or pool. If your local does not have a pool table, then he recommends telling your local landlord to visit the site of pool table suppliers to install one which should draw more customers.
