Foster care the United States is a system by which children who have been orphaned, given up for adoption, or who are temporarily unable to be with their parents live with a family for a short period of time. The system has many pitfalls and has somewhat of a bad reputation, which has led to an increased demand for foster parents – that is, people who are willing to foster one or more children until they can be permanently adopted.

1. New Jersey

The Department of Children and Families in New Jersey has made a call on their website for foster parents. They are specifically calling out for those wishing to foster older children, or children who have siblings. An effort is always made to keep siblings together, but in order for that to happen, there needs to be foster families willing to foster more than one child.

2. New York

Although New York has shown a decreasing trend in the amount of children in New York foster care, there is still a need for foster parents. The problem hasn't been eradicated, and it is important to consider that there is a constant influx of children into the foster care system. Because foster parents are an important step in placing the children permanently, New York is making an effort to provide as many foster homes as possible to children in need.

3. Texas

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that's true for their foster care system as well. The Lone Star State has a foster care system that recruits people, married or single, who are above 21 years of age to foster children. Many of these children have backgrounds of abuse and neglect, and that issue is addressed heavily in the training that the Texas Department of Family and Protection Services provides to potential foster parents.

4. California

There are thousands of children in California foster care who are in need of homes. There is a special need in California for children who need temporary homes because of neglect or abuse, and cannot be placed with a relative. These children become wards of the court and they are presided over by the juvenile justice system in California.

5. Florida

It's not all fun, games, and sandy beaches in Florida – there are more than 8,000 children in need there. Many children in Florida are multilingual, and there is a call for foster parents in Florida who speak multiple languages. Florida, like New Jersey, is looking especially for parents who are willing to take on siblings and children who are older.

No matter where the potential foster parents live, there is a definite need. It's not a simple undertaking, and there are many steps to completing the process, but for those who are willing to open their hearts and homes to foster children, they will be heroes all across the country.
