Halloween-time can be festive for the entire family — a variety of costumes are made in all sizes, so that families with parents of varying sizes and children of varying ages can all participate in a family-oriented holiday. For Halloween parties, and for those parents that embrace the spirit and dress up to take their children trick or treating, family costumes are cute and often get a laugh out of friends and neighbors.

Below are a variety of costume ideas for families of all types, and from all interests. Whether science fiction fans, lovers of cartoons, or with a tendency toward the darker and more macabre, there are ideas for any type of family.

Costumes for Every Family

For Scooby Doo fanatics, or those with an appreciation of 70s fashion, consider dressing the family as characters from the famous cartoon. Dress as Fred and Daphne, and dress the kids up as Velma, Shaggy and baby Scooby, according to age, gender, and disposition. On a similar note, dressing the family as flower children from the 60s is always fun. There are hippie costumes available for all ages, and any holiday is more enjoyable when sporting a picked out afro wig (or even picking out your own hair) and some rose-tinted shades.

If you've got a family of girls, or little boys with a love of Disney, consider dressing up as the Disney princesses and princes, with Snow White, Belle, and Ariel costumes, coupled with Eric and Prince Charming. Similarly, consider some Marvel themed costumes — Batman costumes can be fun, with Batman, Cat Woman, and Joker attire, or a whole family of Spider Man themed ensembles.

For an older crowd, consider Roarin' 20s themed gangster costumes, or Gatsby themed costumes — girls can be flappers, and men can wear fedoras and black suits. This is especially useful if you live in a colder area, as there are many ways to incorporate warm shawls and 20s style coats into these costumes without being too bulky or out of character.

Younger kids and adults alike will get a kick out of Muppets themed costumes, which are also warm and ideal for cold weather. Another route in terms of television/movie based costume ideas could be classic Star Wars suits — with Mom as Princess Laya, Dad as Darth Vader, and a young Anakin, Yoda, Boba Fett,. Consider, on a similar note, a whole family of Storm Troopers.
