A home is typically the biggest investment made in a person’s lifetime; it makes sense, then to know not only how to take care of it, but how to make it your own. Deciding how to upgrade your home is based entirely on your own needs and skill set, but the average person has the tools and level of craftsmanship for basic projects that can transform their houses into the ideal home.

Cheap and Easy Upgrades

Paint It sounds simple, but a fresh coat of paint in a color that complements the size and shape of the room can impact the look of a home more than many other small upgrades. Most paint stores offer paint samples for about $5, so the homeowner can test shades before committing to a few gallons of a new color. Sherwin Williams has their entire paint selection online, along with HGTV sponsored help videos and recommendations for first time painters, for both the interior and exterior of the house.

Tiles

Tiling, though a tedious process, is certainly manageable for first time DIY-ers. Retiling can be a cheap way to update and add flair to an out-of-date kitchen or bathroom.

Hardware

Another good way to revitalize a drab kitchen or bathroom is to change the hardware on cabinets and drawers. Local hardware stores offer a whole variety of options for cabinets that are relatively inexpensive and can change the entire atmosphere of the room. Switching out simple door fixtures can add a personal touch as well — it is amazing how much door knobs can personalize a home.

Lawncare

A designed and manicured lawn can provide the same satisfaction as a small-scale interior upgrade, and while some lawn upgrades can be pricey, it is possible to maintain a pleasant outdoor space with only a few hours of work.

A patio is a pleasant way to update your outdoor space, and can be created in much the same way that any other tile project is completed. Prepare the space by digging and grating the lawn, and then lay tiles on wet grout, and let it set. Lawn furniture and an outdoor eating area add a whole new space to your home.

A shed can also help to utilize an outdoor space, and are relatively inexpensive to build. If you don’t have the carpentry skills to design and build your own shed, sites like WorkmanSheds.com.au are perfect for home and business projects, and involve a consultation, so the homeowner knows the logistics of the investment he/she is making. Don’t forget to check a cities building regulations before committing to a large-scale project like an outdoor shed or patio.
