In the wake of deadly shootings in Aurora, CO and Sandy Hook, CT, the nation centers on concerns for citizen safety and the gun control debate heats up. While many believe that strict gun restrictions are a good thing, others believe that the right to bear arms should be preserved and protected.
The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states, “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” These words were designed to prevent enslavement to the government. The Founding Fathers understood that a “well regulated” militia means, “functioning properly,” not, “controlled by the government.
Gun control may be seen as a part of an effort to eviscerate individual sovereignty and replace it with dependence on the state. On this issue, many people cite Thomas Jefferson who said: “When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When people fear the government, there is tyranny.”
