Twitter is so important and due to the increased onus on social signals via Google, it is set to be increasingly central to SEO. This in turn means that increasing your engagement rates via Twitter is something that is now more important than ever. So, how do you do it – we take a look at how to fine tune that campaign.

The Bio

The biography is very important to your Twitter attempts and though many people never really consider it, the words used here are extremely important. Certain words encourage people to take a peek and it’s proven that the likes of ‘official’, ‘guru’, ‘expert’ and a host of other terms will increase the number of people following you on the micro blogging site.

Images

A picture is a necessity on Twitter and you’d be surprised at the sheer number of businesses and people with a terrible image, or worse still the hatchling egg image. Images catch the eye, create an impression and stick in the mind. They also create a personal feel that resonates with other users.

Individual Accounts

If you have a number of people tending your Twitter account, then why not have a number of accounts. This is a great way to create personal feel and instead of talking to a faceless corporate account, users can get in contact with an individual, with a picture, face and personality; albeit under your company name. This can be great for everything from gaining followers to CRM, which can really rely on the personality.

Links

People all too often don’t link within their Tweets and it’s been shown in numerous surveys that links add a lot to Tweets. People are more inclined to click through to a link as once relevant they offer value and may make the tweet more interesting. In short, there is a link between an account’s tweets with or without URLs and the number of followers an account has and a tweet gets. According to research placing a link after the first quarter of the tweet also greatly increases the amount of interaction significantly when compared to placing it at the end.

It’s Like Real Life

Finally, remember that Twitter conversations greatly model real life conversations. We all try and escape that individual that places ‘I’ and ‘me’ in every sentence and Twitter is the same. Brands that talk about nothing but their company and include the two aforementioned words, are shown to do worse on Twitter. It’s no surprise that ‘you’ is one of the top 10 most commonly used words in highly retweeted tweets.

Funnily, twitter accounts with a downtrodden overall tone, seem to also shed followers, while upbeat accounts tend to do well. See, it’s just like a real social scene – remember that and you’re half way to success.

Follow the above advice and you’ll be on your way towards Twitter success.
