witchblade red sonja WBRSv1TPCovPublisher's description: Join Dynamite Entertainment and Top Cow Productions as they bring two of comics most celebrated heroines together in one terrifying tale of loss and redemption.

Red Sonja, the She-Devil with a Sword, and Sara Pezzini, the modern-day bearer of the Witchblade, must find a way to defeat a wickedly depraved being as old and dark as the cosmos in order to prevent the world from eternally becoming a true Hell on Earth.

by Doug Wagner and artist Cezar Razek, distributed by Diamond Book Distributors on Sale March 20, 2013

My thoughts – This trade paperback (TP) collects the 5 issues series in to one 120 page book.  Historically I've not read a lot of the Red Sonja books but I have followed the Witchblade series since it started back in the 90s.  I was/am a fan of Michael Lane Turner's art and at the time was buying up all the new Image comics like crazy.  So, when I saw this ‘collabo‘, I thought it would be very cool to catch up on the Witchblade adventures and get more of a sense of what the Red Sonja stories are all about.

For the most part, I'm not going to give away any spoilers but will give some general commentary on the story.  Since Red Sonja and the modern Witchblade are set in basically 2 different historical periods the writers devised a way to tie the timelines together through the Witchblade itself.  The main rival in the story is basically a powerful fallen angel and in order to ultimately defeat him the Witchblade and Red Sonja have to team up, thus the combined title.  The story was ok but it seemed to skip over some details.  For example, I'm unclear as to how and why Red Sonja's father was involved.  Maybe this is something that I would have understood if i read the comics but from this collection only, I was baffled. Another thing was that the back story of the bad guy was not all that clear.  Where did he really come from?  Why was he fallen?  I don't need pages and pages of dialog but I'm looking for a little more depth.  As long as we're questioning things, one could wonder why the heroines are running around in bikini armor but I think that's out of bounds.  I expect that from both the characters, so.. whatever.   The art was good and the story was OK.  Obviously, if you're a fan of either of these series or missed the single issues, this is a book you'll want to pick up.  You can find the book at dynamite.com or your local comic shop.
