When deciding where to buy or rent a home, the type of street where your new home will be located is an important part of the decision making process. A home that is located in a cul-de-sac, also known as a ‘dead-end’ neighborhood street, may be on your wish list for your new home. Buying or renting a home on a cul-de-sac offers many various benefits to you and your family.

The most obvious benefit to living in a cul-de-sac is the lack of through traffic traveling by automobile on your street. Because a cul-de-sac street is a natural dead-end street, the automobile traffic into and out of the cul-de-sac is limited to the local residents and their guests. Less traffic means less noise and greater privacy as well as greater safety for the residents of the cul-de-sac. The reduced risk from automobile traffic makes cul-de-sacs especially attractive to parents of young children.

Besides the reduced risk of injury to children from speeding traffic, there are other benefits to parents of children who live in a cul-de-sac. Cul-de-sacs attract young families who seek the safer environment thus offering socialization opportunities for the children to make friends and have playmates as well as for the neighboring parents to build friendships. Cul-de-sacs also offer an ideal place for children to play outdoors, particularly when riding bicycles, scooters, or skateboards.

Neighborhood Camaraderie

Because cul-de-sacs tend to have fewer homes than traditional streets, it is easier for people to get to know their neighbors in the cul-de-sac. Cul-de-sacs also are a natural place for neighbors to plan block parties or picnics because with proper permits from the local authorities, a cul-de-sac can be blocked off to any incoming or outgoing traffic during the block party. Homes in a cul-de-sac generally face outward toward the other homes, creating a greater sense of community for the residents as they can see their neighbors’ front doors from their own.

Cul-de-sac streets offer greater privacy than traditional streets due to the lack of through traffic mentioned above and also due to the smaller number of homes found in a cul-de-sac versus a traditional street. Cul-de-sac homes often are situated on lots that back up to woods, fields, or other open land, thus creating greater privacy for the rear of the home.

Lot Size

Cul-de-sac streets are built as naturally curved, closed-loop streets rather than straight up and down streets. Because of the natural curvature of a cul-de-sac, the property lots are generally shaped like a piece of pie with the smaller tip toward the front of the property and the wider edge along the rear of the property. These odd, pie-shaped property lots are often larger lots than what is found on a traditional straight street.

The type of street on which your home is located can make a big difference in your overall enjoyment of your home and your neighborhood. If you are seeking to live in a home that offers a safer environment for your children as well as greater privacy from the world but still offers opportunities to build neighborly friendships and host neighborhood gatherings, living in a cul-de-sac street is a great choice for you and for your family.
