Heartburn is one unfortunate health condition that countless millions are forced to deal with every single day. While most believe that this phenomenon only occurs at night, it can cause discomfort and pain at any time of the day.

Whether an individual is forced to deal with this pain chronically or only experienced the rare occurrence, it is essential to understand the basics of why heartburn happens and a few tips that can be kept in mind to quickly put an end to heartburn. Most people choose to take a medication based in magnesium oxide, which can be bought at almost any local grocery store or from a huge number of online outlets.

Here are three simple tricks that anyone can use to stop heartburn and prevent any serious damage to one’s body:

1. Keep a Close Eye on Your Diet
Carefully watching one’s diet is often the first step when it comes to stopping or completely preventing heartburn for two reasons. The first reason is that many foods are known to be irritants that may increase the production of acids within the stomach while decreasing the functionality of one's esophagus. Many studies show that some of the most popular irritants are sodas, alcoholic beverages, and spicy foods. By themselves, these foods may not cause heartburn, but they could increase one’s risk of suffering from heartburn.

The amount of food that is eaten will also affect heartburn as it limits the capacity of one’s stomach and results in the stomach acids traveling upwards. Alternatively, some foods have been shown to reduce one’s chances of experiencing heartburn. Some of the most popular home remedies include chamomile products, natural licorice, milk, gum, ginger, and chicory root.

2. Be Wary of Smoking and Other Tobacco Products
Smoking and the use of other tobacco products is often one of the leading factors in chronic heartburn. These products not only affect the mouth and lungs, they will also damage and change the structure of the stomach, stomach lining, and esophagus. Primarily, smoking decreases the abilities of the lower esophagus to stop acids from moving beyond the stomach. These products will also reduce the amount of saliva that a human produces and increase the amount of stomach acid that is produced.

3. Avoid Excessive Pressure on the Stomach and Chest
Any overwhelming pressure to the chest or stomach can lead to occasional heartburn for an individual. Most doctors suggest that patients experiencing heartburn do not wear tight-fitting clothes, especially at night. Another common cause of pressure is bending over at the waist and not with one’s knees. This may occur in patients with extremely physical jobs. One’s overall weight can also increase pressure on the stomach and reduce the ability of the body to stop the movement of stomach acid.
