How Has Public Transportation Changed Daily Lives?

Public transportation has changed most people’s daily lives for the better. In the past it meant an easy way to get to work, and a cheap way to get around in big cities, but these days it means so much more.

While some people try to argue that public transit isn’t relevant, it has been shown effective in major metropolitan areas throughout Asia and Europe. Now, even many American cities are working to improve their mass transit services.

Some of the greatest benefits of public transit are cheap car insurance, fast ways to get around, and an efficient way to get around crowded cities. Lower car insurance rates in particular reward cautious drivers and drivers who take public transit, and use their cars less.

Is Public Transportation Really Still Relevant?

Many people believe that public transit is outdated. This particularly happens in major cities with low quality transit systems, with transit users who have never experienced the joy of riding busses, trains, and subways that run often and on schedule.

For example, the Tokyo metropolitan area depends heavily on subways and trains. In fact, without them the city would grind to a halt.

The trains in Tokyo always run on time. The few times a year the trains are actually late, the ticket handlers issue special receipts apologizing to their riders, as well as excusing them for being late to their jobs.

Japanese bosses do not question these tickets since it was impossible for their employee to be on time. This shows how modern, cutting edge cities not only make public transit relevant, but rely on it.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently stated that restoring full public transit was one of the two most important tasks in the recovery from Hurricane Sandy, which recently struck the east coast. New York relies on public transit, and cannot functions without it.

Cheaper Car Insurance For Responsible Drivers

Additionally, public transit also rewards drivers. Cheap car insurance is given to people who regularly take public transit because their risk of accidents are so much less.

So mass transit means less wear and tear on cars as well as less upkeep costs. This is very important for people, particularly families looking to save money given the current state of the economy.

In California, Proposition 33 is coming up for a vote this Nov. 6. This would allow drivers to take their insurance histories to other companies, thus making sure they are rewarded for responsible driving and public transit use if they choose to switch insurance companies.

Public Transit, Cheap Car Insurance, and Daily Life

Public transit is environmentally friendly, cheap, and convenient in most major cities, and saves you money on car insurance, gas, and the other headaches that normally accompany driving a car. Which makes public transit, paradoxically, very helpful for people who like to drive their own cars.

Of course, not all companies give you a break on car insurance rates if you take public transit regularly. However, some do; and if you don’t do your homework to find them, then you’re really paying more than you need to for car insurance.
