Amplify logoAnother one bites the dust, or atleast pivots in a new direction.

Amplify – a New York City based start-up founded in 2009 that focused on social blogging and curation services has announced they are shutting down.

In summary, Amplify enabled people to spark conversation around news, thoughts and ideas they want to share. Using Amplify’s proprietary browser add-on, users could clip, share and add their take on text, images, videos and URLs they find on the web. Additionally, they can microblog directly from Amplify or write full blog posts.

Sounds awesome right? Well unfortunately, Founder Eric Goldstein sent the following email to existing users today:

After much consideration, we’ve decided that it is time to shutdown Amplify. On behalf of the team, I want to thank you for being part of our journey. It is important to us that we shut down the service in the most responsible and considerate manner possible. Towards that end there are two things that you should consider:

  • First, we’ve arranged with Clipboard (a new service under entirely different ownership and management) to give you an account on their service, which is currently accessible by invitation-only. You can accept this invitation and register your account now.
  • Second, from the registration page, Clipboard will allow you to easily request that your old clips be preserved in Clipboard. If you don’t want them converted, then do nothing. We can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to convert all of your older clips, but if the demand is sufficient, we will do our best.

We hope that you’ll accept the invitation to join Clipboard. Like Amplify, they believe that the Web is better when people can easily save, share and discuss the parts that they care about.

For more information, please see the Clipboard blog post.

All the best,

Eric Goldstein
Founder, Amplify

Clipboard logoSo now we go to Clipboard. A similar service, in a blog post, Founder Gary William Flake writes

“Clipboard is excited to continue to grow its user base by offering invitations to former Clipmarks and Amplify users…You’ll find that the underlying premise of the site is similar to Clipmarks and Amplify. We believe that Clipboard expands on those functions to bring you a more enhanced experience.”

I’ve transferred my account to Clipboard and recommend those of you looking for a social information curation service to check it out.
